Over the past three years, 3 Angels Nepal (3AN) has been working intensively along the Indo-Nepal borders – rescuing and rehabilitating young girls and women who have been trafficked into the sex industry, or are at risk of being trafficked.
Recently, 3AN’s efforts were recognised and affirmed – on a national level.
On March 27, 2014, the ABC National Television in Nepal aired a documentary on 3AN’s work – highlighting the Women’s Safe Haven, and prevention and rescue operations. Aired during primetime, the documentary gave Rajendra Gautam – the founding director of 3AN – an opportunity to bring national awareness to the issue of human trafficking in Nepal.
Following the airing of the documentary, 3AN and other non-government organisations (NGO) addressing human trafficking in Nepal were asked to participate in a survey to evaluate Nepali organisations involved in the fight against human trafficking. As a result of the survey conducted by Nepal Television – the official government channel – and Sagarmatha Television – a private nation wide channel, 3AN were noted as one of the most effective NGOs working in the fight against human trafficking in Nepal.
Within weeks of the survey, 3AN’s branch operations were interviewed by another leading television station, and again given the opportunity to raise awareness amongst Nepali communities nation wide.
“Our 3 Angels Nepal team are very excited about the exposure we have been given,” says Rajendra. “We are positive that our messages will help 3AN, and other similar organisations in the fight against human trafficking – a horrible reality for many women and girls in Nepal.”
To further 3ANs effectiveness in the fight against human trafficking, and due to the increased risk of working in this field, 3AN have hired two new experienced staff. Both staff – Shreeram Dawadi, a specialised lawyer in human trafficking and child rights, and Narayan Dawadi, a specialist in human rights issues, women rights, and sustainability – will represent 3AN as an official trainers on Human Trafficking.
“3AN have had numerous invitations from other like-minded organisation to be trained in addressing human trafficking issue,” says Rajendra. “Now having official trainers, we will be able to help build the capacity of other organisations, and grow our relationships with other organisations and the government of Nepal.”
